Only Children Hear Me by Mary L. Byrne
Author's Statement
One woman’s real life story - Surviving abuse, cancer, disability and sexual molestation leads to the creation of a Children’s Chapter Book.
After being treated for Lymphoma I discovered a desire to create a symbol which would represent hope and safety for children. I chose Jake, a loving English Shepherd, to carry the message.
I have attempted to give children a better understanding of serious illness, race, adoption, disability and abuse, gently, in story form, through Jake. He also encourages children that are being abused to speak out, and talk to an adult they can trust.
If we can encourage children to talk at a younger age, then get them the help they need, perhaps they can become their true selves without the pain of abuse affecting every aspect of their lives, as it does when they don’t get the help they need. The road back can be a very long and painful journey.
